About the Role
This is routine work involving the responsibility for the safe and economical operation and care of a car or passenger van. The incumbent is responsible for rendering assistance in the appropriate way to Veterans in their transportation to medical appointments and VA treatment facilities. The work is performed in accordance with well-established policy and procedures under the direct supervision of the Director of the Veterans Service Agency with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment. Supervision is not a direct responsibility of this position; the incumbent will be responsible for assigning the work of the subordinate chauffeurs. Does related duties as required.
Requirements
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Manage the receipt and scheduling of reservations for transportation services for all eligible Veterans;
Verify the eligibility of all Veterans for transportation services;
Provide training to subordinate chauffeurs, instructing them on safety, policies, and procedures;
Oversee the scheduling and assignment of work to subordinate chauffeurs;
Establish efficient transportation routes daily;
Maintain vehicle logs, passenger logs, and schedule fleet maintenance;
Transport Veterans to and from medical appointments, hospitals, and treatment facilities;
Assist Veterans with boarding and alighting from the vehicle as needed;
Escort Veterans to and from appointments as necessary;
Provide special assistance and accommodations to Veterans when required;
Engage with VA staff on various issues;
Educate Veterans on safety protocols, policies, and procedures related to transportation services;
Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance to ensure vehicles remain operational;
Conduct pre- and post-use vehicle inspections;
Clean the interior and exterior of vehicles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school graduation or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, along with a New York State Commercial Driver’s License with a Passenger Transport endorsement, or three (3) years of experience operating a passenger van. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate to the vehicles operated at the time of appointment, which must be maintained throughout employment.
