Understanding the Dwyer Coalition
Strengthening New York's Veteran Peer Support Network
The Dwyer Coalition for Military Veterans & Families is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening and supporting New York State's Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Project network.
Founded in December 2020 as a statewide collaborative effort and later incorporated as an independent nonprofit organization in 2025, the Coalition serves as the statewide coordinating body that brings together Dwyer Programs, Veteran-serving organizations, government agencies, community partners, and stakeholders committed to improving the lives of Veterans, service members, military families, caregivers, and survivors throughout New York State.
Our mission is simple: strengthen peer support, foster collaboration, reduce isolation, and help build stronger communities for those who have served.
Why the Coalition Exists
The Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Project has grown into one of New York State's most recognized Veteran peer support initiatives. While local Dwyer Programs provide direct services and support within their communities, there has historically been no dedicated statewide organization focused on connecting programs, sharing best practices, promoting collaboration, and advancing the overall success of the network.
The Dwyer Coalition was created to fill that gap.
We believe that no county should have to solve challenges alone. By bringing programs together, encouraging collaboration, and providing opportunities to learn from one another, we help strengthen the entire network while supporting local innovation and community-driven solutions.
When one county develops a successful initiative, others can learn from it. When challenges emerge, programs have a statewide network of peers and partners to turn to for guidance, support, and collaboration.
What We Do
The Coalition works behind the scenes to strengthen the infrastructure that supports New York's Dwyer network.
Our efforts include:
-
Facilitating monthly statewide Dwyer Coalition meetings.
-
Supporting communication and collaboration among Dwyer Programs.
-
Maintaining New York's statewide Dwyer website and resource hub.
-
Developing educational materials and awareness initiatives.
-
Supporting advocacy efforts that elevate Veteran and military family issues.
-
Coordinating statewide partnerships and stakeholder engagement.
-
Supporting evaluation, data collection, and information sharing.
-
Expanding opportunities for peer support and community connection.
-
Operating the Dwyer Virtual Community to provide year-round connection and engagement opportunities.
-
Developing new initiatives that strengthen support for Veterans, service members, military families, caregivers, and survivors.
While much of this work occurs behind the scenes, its impact is felt throughout communities across New York State.
What We Do Not Do
The Dwyer Coalition works closely with local Dwyer Programs throughout New York State, but we do not operate or manage individual county programs.
Each local Dwyer Program is independently operated through its host organization and maintains its own staffing, funding, programming, and local partnerships.
The Coalition's role is to strengthen the network as a whole by providing coordination, collaboration, education, advocacy, resource development, and statewide support.
This distinction is important.
Donations made to the Dwyer Coalition support statewide initiatives and Coalition operations. Contributions are not distributed directly to local Dwyer Programs unless specifically designated through a grant, sponsorship, or partnership agreement.
Individuals interested in supporting a local Dwyer Program are encouraged to contact that program directly or visit the website of its host organization.
Why Your Support Matters
Strong peer support networks do not happen by accident. They require coordination, communication, technology, leadership, and sustained investment.
The Coalition receives no dedicated state funding for its operations and relies on grants, sponsorships, donations, and community partnerships to continue its work.
Support from individuals, foundations, corporations, and community partners helps make it possible to:
-
Expand statewide collaboration efforts.
-
Strengthen the Dwyer Virtual Community.
-
Develop educational and awareness resources.
-
Increase access to peer support opportunities.
-
Support training and professional development.
-
Improve communication and information sharing.
-
Advance advocacy efforts on behalf of New York's military-connected community.
-
Invest in scholarships and workforce development opportunities.
-
Develop innovative solutions that strengthen communities across New York State.
Every contribution helps strengthen the infrastructure that supports Veterans and military families statewide.
